The name swap occurred because a major fire swept through the original Diamond Princess during construction, leading to a delay. Both sister ships were being constructed at the same time, so the original Sapphire assumed the role of Diamond. This name swap assisted in keeping the delivery date of Diamond Princess on time.

My mother and sister sailed to Singapore on the Empire Halladale in 1949, to join my father. During the stop at Ceylon they went to Colombo Zoo. Before the days of air conditioning, my mother opened the port hole in the Indian Ocean section and was soaked, but at least the wave was warm
