The Avelona Star was one of five ships ordered by Blue Star Line, named Almeda, Avila, Andalucia, Arandora, and Avelona
Avelona was rebuilt as a cargo vessel with the removal of upper decks and second funnel. This was due to the Depression and the drop off in passenger traffic.

She suffered a crankcase explosion in her port B&W propulsion diesel engine, which ignited diesel fuel from the fractured fuel lines. Sank Mediterranean 22 Jan 1940. Rescue efforts were hampered by bad weather & over 100 people died in the blaze
