Steven Tindle messaged ‘As well as her normal crew at the time of torpedoing she also had aboard 210 passengers(149 military and 61 civilians, including 44 internees) plus 20 DEMs gunners(13 Royal Artillery Maritime Regiment and 7 Royal Navy) Despite the U-boat reporting that after the sinking there were about 10 lifeboats and 15 to 20 liferafts afloat and occupied only one lifeboat was rescued, by HMS Bideford. Of the 393 people aboard 362 died and just 31 were rescued.’
